Sources and references Timeline of digital creative tools, 1985–2020

The “timeline of digital creative tools” (featured in essay one of this series), tracks the releases and updates of 50 different creative software products across a 25-year period. All data was sourced from publicly available websites which are listed below in full. One notable characteristic of this list is how different the sources become in the second half of the timeline. What starts as an annual rhythm of versions, well-archived through the halls of Wikipedia, evolves into a constant and volumous flow of downloadable updates. We see different products embrace different relationships with the notion of what constitutes a “version”, and release announcements become more fragmented across blog posts, press releases, and tweets.
